The main advantage is the ability to avoid collisions between trains, between track maintenance vehicles, collisions with operators or obstacles on the track, derailments and other serious incidents, saving lives and reducing material damage.

As part of the Railway Collision Avoidance System (RCAS) project, DLR developed a viable overall system for avoiding collisions between trains, which was implemented and demonstrated as a prototype.
It combines a train-to-train communication system, a positioning system and a system for situation analysis and decision support. It relies only on sensors and communication technology on the train, so it can be installed at a fraction of the cost of a system that relies on trackside technology.

Måske kunne man bygge et netværk af UWB telefoner som også kunne advare dem der forsøger at krydse togspor uden at kolidere med et tog?
